New online etiquette for recreational athletes

The reason for creating the "Respect your borders" website came last year, after Carinthians sought out nature more than usual during the pandemic and also in winter to find balance. People were often to be found in areas where, for example, they disturbed the game or damaged some young trees. It is said that one does not want to accuse anyone of deliberate wrongdoing.

Overview of legal bases

At the beginning of the year there was already a round table at which more than 20 representatives from alpine clubs, agriculture and forestry, hunters, tourism and leisure industry, nature lovers, mountain rescue services, mountain and hiking guides and also the specialist departments of the state participated.

The new website is intended to help recreational athletes exercise with respect for nature, hunting and forestry officer Martin Gruber (ÖVP): "A lot doesn't happen intentionally or maliciously, but through ignorance. For example, the platform is intended to show which dos and don'ts apply to third-party properties; what legal basis applies.” Reforestation areas, for example, may not be entered according to the Forest Act. There are also wildlife sanctuaries.

Routes away from feeding areas are shown

The website also contains detailed hiking routes throughout Carinthia. The various experts contributed their specialist knowledge to the work on the homepage, for example the Carinthian Hunters' Association, Administrative Director Mario Deutschmann. A lot of animal suffering can be avoided by avoiding feeding areas in winter. Routes would be shown that do not pass in the immediate vicinity. "We also contributed our wildlife ecological and legal know-how," says Deutschmann.

The cost of "Respect your limits" is 15,000 euros. However, the website is not complete, because everything that happens on it is an ongoing process. Of course, those responsible would also learn, says Deutschmann.
