Moto3 Silverstone FT1: Veteran Romano Fenati dominates the opener

(Motorsport-Total.com) - The Moto3 class opened the race weekend in Great Britain and in the first free practice session a veteran drove the best time. Romano Fenati and his Husqvarna dominated the opening round at Silverstone and, with a time of 2:12.196 minutes, was more than half a second faster than Jeremy Alcoba (Honda) in second place.

Romano Fenati sometimes had a lead of more than a second Zoom

At 5.9 kilometers, Silverstone is the longest track on the calendar. Since the lap times in the Moto3 class are more than two minutes, the drivers cannot do many laps in practice and the time gaps in the field are relatively large.

As the circuit was last raced in 2019, some riders had to get to grips with the fast, fluid layout. Things didn't start well for Scotsman John McPhee. After about 20 minutes, he highsided off his Honda at turn 12. McPhee was unharmed.

A few minutes later it was Lorenzo Fellon (Honda). The rookie was also unhurt. With a cloudy sky and an air temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, the conditions in the morning were relatively cool.

Experience paid off. In terms of timing, Fenati sometimes had a lead of more than a second on the other drivers. In the end it was exactly 0.660 seconds. There were only five riders in one second in FT1.

Behind Fenati, there were Alcoba, Gabriel Rodrigo (Honda), Ayumu Sasaki (KTM) and World Championship favorite Pedro Acosta (KTM). Completing the top 10 were Filip Salac (KTM), Jaume Masia (KTM), Riccardo Rossi (KTM), Dennis Foggia (Honda) and Andrea Migno (Honda) (to the result).

Maximilian Kofler started with a wildcard at Silverstone in 2019. Despite knowing the track, the Austrian was 3.2 seconds behind. That meant 25th place for the KTM rider.

Andi Farid Izdihar is absent this weekend due to visa issues. The Indonesian will not be replaced in Honda Team Asia either. But Niccolo Antonelli is back. The Italian injured his right wrist in Austria.

Shortly before the end of the practice session, two more riders fell in turn 17. Shortly after Stefano Nepa (KTM), Deniz Öncü was also hit there, and his KTM had to be pushed away by the marshals. The Turk also stood on his feet and was unharmed.
