Austria is a tough nut to crack for Decathlon. The sporting goods giant made three attempts to enter the market. The French, who set the pace for long stretches in 51 countries, backed down twice. In retrospect, says Gabor Posfai, it was a good decision. The package of around 50 branches at former Eybl locations, for which the group and the discounter Sports Direct dueled at times, would simply have been too big.
