💡 tip

If you want to get more information about creating a blog, we have created a guide on the subject for you.

In contrast to the foreign blog platforms, you need a hoster to create a website with WordPress. Many hoster will take WordPress installing you when you book a WordPress package. Then you can start directly with the settings and the design of your website.

If you decide against such a package, you have to consider three points:

Webspace: When choosing your hosting provider, note that this PHP 7 or higher, MySQL 5.6 or higher and HTTPS supported.

FTP access: The File Transfer Protocol is used to upload files from your computer to a server. You install yourself FTP software and enter your server data there. Then transfer your WordPress installation files to the server.

Domain: Usually you can book your domain directly with the web space from your hosting provider.Note that the domain should represent your company or your brand.

The installation of WordPress usually only takes a few minutes.Call your domain after successful installation to follow the next steps. After that you can already create your WordPress website.

Create WordPress website: Step-by-step instructions

In the following we will explain step-by-step to how you can create your WordPress website.

Step 1: Edit WordPress settings

After installing WordPress you come to your dashboard. Here you will find all functions on the left side of your screen.Several sub -items are hidden behind each menu item.In the first step, the processing of the WordPress settings makes sense.

Here you determine the title and subtitle of your website.Keep in mind that browsers and search engines access this information. Therefore, both should represent your brand or company. Then it is about the state settings, i.e. your time zone, the language, date and time.

Under the setting point "Discussion" you determine whether your readers can comment on your contributions inside or not.In addition, it makes sense that you free the comments before publication. On the one hand because of possible inappropriate statements, but also because of spam comments.

In addition, the basic settings are about the permalinks. Here you determine the structure of your links. For example, do you want to have the category of a blog article in the link or the date of publication? You can also use so -called "speaking URLs": the name of the article is then part of the URL.

Step 2: Assign WordPress roles

If you do not manage your WordPress website alone, it makes sense to assign the various employees: also assign your own profiles inside. To make these changes, you can click on "User" in the dashboard. These profiles can also differ in their usage rights:

Subscribers: Few right inside. These users: inside can log in to the backend, edit your profiles, but do not actively write your own posts.

Employees: Inside can write contributions themselves and also edit them. But you cannot publish them yourself.

Author: Inside, your own articles can publish yourself. However, only your own article.

Editor: Inside, the rights have all contributions, i.e. the own articles and that of the other users: edit and publish inside.

Administrator: Inside all rights and may change all settings.

Be sure to give the individual contributors only the rights that they actually need.In addition, you should check the settings of your plugins, since some plugins are not only for administrator: share in the inside, but also for "smaller" rollers.

Of course you can also use paid themes here.If you bought a theme on a market place, you can also upload the ZIP file here. All further steps are identical.

Step 4: Install WordPress plugins

With plugins you can expand your website with additional functions.Under the menu item "Plugins" you can add these additional functions. The range of plugins is very large, there are many free but also paid plugins.

The plugins are used for different purposes, such as to improve SEOs or security. You can also expand your website with a plugin: If you are interested in an online shop, for example, you can manage your orders and products directly on the website with "WooCommerce".

Step 5: Create WordPress page

WordPress distinguishes pages and contributions.Contributions are articles that are chronologically arranged.Pages, on the other hand, are static, such as an over-uns page or the imprint. You can create a page via the menu items "Pages" and "Create".

Here you enter a page title and your content. This is possible either with HTML or the text editor. You can add headings and body text, mark text as fat, italics or crossed out, insert lists and quotes, change the text color or add multimedia files.By the way, the process for creation is the same for pages and contributions.

Step 6: publish WordPress page

In the next step you can publish your page via the "Publish" button. In advance, you should check the preview whether the page is displayed correctly. If you do not want to publish the page immediately, you can first save it as a "draft".

If your page is created correctly, but you only want to publish it at a certain point in time, you can also plan it.On the right side you can make all settings.

Click next to the point "Publish immediately" on "Edit".Here you can enter the exact date and the time when your page should go online. Finally, click on "Plan" to save the settings.

Step 7: Use WordPress media library

Under the menu item "Mediathek" you can add pictures, videos and audio files to use them in articles and pages. Mit Drag & Drop kannst du auch mehrere Dateien gleichzeitig hochladen. You can also edit the files retrospectively.

For example, add a title and a lettering or description.Note: If you delete a file from the media library, it will also be removed in the articles and sides.
