Brave, strong and free

Zarifa Ghafari landed safely in Germany just a few days before we started shooting. The former youngest mayor of Afghanistan and thus the most prominent of our protagonists welcomes us between many other media appointments. Zarifa is now using the media to fight for her country and for women. On the day the Taliban celebrate the departure of the last US soldiers, we see her deeply sad and shocked, shortly afterwards the young woman is combative and optimistic again. What is most impressive about Marga Flader is how much you can move from a small village north of Hamburg – without a large administrative structure and a huge network. Like them, Mehria Ashuftah-Lührig is restless and driven these days. The German-Afghan lawyer has been on rotation since the Taliban took power, mainly trying to help acquaintances and relatives who are stuck in Kabul - a task to which she still devotes all her energy in her free time and to the point of total exhaustion . And that actually makes the shooting difficult: the cell phone rings all day, new messages keep coming in: is there a chance of getting someone on a plane after all?

Bold, strong and free
