Shaft position sensor - what should you know?

Shaft position sensor - what should you know?

Electronics in modern cars is constantly being developed, one of its tasks is to control the operation of internal combustion engines. It consists of a number of electrical sensors that monitor and, if necessary, send signals to a control unit in the vehicle. The vehicle structure designed in this way allows for the best possible work efficiency, while reducing exhaust emissions to the atmosphere.

Where is the shaft position sensor?

The crankshaft position sensor is one of the most important sensors in a car. Its task is to determine the engine speed and the position of the crankshaft. Thanks to this information, the computer can adjust a number of driving parameters in such a way that the engine runs most efficiently and effectively. Before checking the crankshaft sensor, it is necessary to determine what type of sensor is installed in our car.

Where the shaft position sensor is located depends on the design of the motor. They are most often mounted near the flywheel gear rim of the engine. There are two types of design: inductive sensors and Hall sensors. Knowing the exact location, we can consider how to check the shaft position sensor?

In search of faults and computer diagnostics, it may be necessary to check the sensor. The most important thing we can do is pay attention to its contamination and possible damage. For the proper functioning of such a sensitive element, it is necessary to properly connect the electrical wires in the sensor: the plug and the sensor itself.

Dirt or progressive corrosion can interfere with the transmission of electromagnetic signals to the computer, resulting in poor data readings. If we want to check why the sensor sends disturbing signals or does not send them at all, it is best to go to the service, because direct checking of the crankshaft sensor is complicated, especially when we do not know the exact structure of this element.

Symptoms of a damaged shaft position sensor

We can observe several symptoms, thanks to which we will know that our sensor may have been damaged. The most frequently signaled failures include:

It is worth bearing in mind that similar faults may also appear when we have a damaged power supply or ignition system. In both cases, the fuel supply to the engine is cut off and the engine cannot be started. To be sure that the problem is with a specific sensor, visit a qualified mechanic and run a computer diagnosis.

Regardless of whether we are dealing with a diesel engine or another, damage to the gasoline shaft position sensor looks similar. Importantly, until the sensor type is clearly identified, do not use an ohmmeter to check. The voltage used by the measuring device for the resistance test can destroy the Hall sensor. We are talking not only about mechanical damage, but also an electrical short circuit of the sensor.
